About us

Ito laboratory’s main interest is centered on the history of urban and architectural spaces, especially on Japanese historical cities and their architectural compositions.

Along with empirical studies based on historical documents, old maps, visual materials etc., we also practice field works concerning historical aspects of urban spaces. The subjects of these studies include Japanese cities and the countries overseas including Asia, Europe and North-America.

From the standpoint of our Urban-Architectural History conception, architecture is seen as an element of urban composition. Our aim is to redefine and reevaluate the histories of urban architectural artifacts such as residential, religious or public buildings in the contexts of the city’s historical metamorphosis.

Since late 2000s we are focusing our attention especially on the territorial study of the cities in Europe and Japan with the aim of commencing the new approach on the history of habitation.
