Preface

Twelve years have already passed since the twenty-first century started and people become inevitably aware of a lot of crises and serious problems in human settlements all over the world; fatal disasters, global environmental pollutions, the decline of city culture in general, and so on. This international symposium attempts to challenge these aporia through international collaboration and tries to exchange and integrate specialized knowledge towards the new approaches of urban studies.
This meeting is organized by the research project group “Society of Urban and Territorial History” of Japan which has been engaged in research exchanges among the countries of the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Japan, especially in the field of the history of urban infrastructure and the territorial background of studied areas.
Inviting researchers from various fields of areas in consideration, this symposium aims to review our experiences and to develop cross-cutting academic exchanges on the history of human settlements and their territory. e key issue is the common standpoints and novel vision regarding the urban and territorial studies which will be crucial to rethink the problems of urban settlement in the future.
