趣旨

今世紀に入って12年を経過した現在、人間の居住を取り巻く状況は世界の至るところで深刻な危機に瀕している。その要因は災害、環境汚染、都市文化の衰退など多岐にわたる。この国際シンポジウムは、とりわけ歴史研究に従事する研究者の専門的な知見の交流を通じ、こうした多様な問題に直面する我々が拠って立つ場所を確認し、さらには都市研究の新たな視座を探ろうとするものである。

国内に加えて海外（オランダ、イタリア、フランス）より建築史・文献史・考古学の専門家を招き、歴史的観点からみた都市空間の諸相、都市のインフラストラクチュア、さらに都市を包含する領域的ひろがりと人間の関わりについて、多角的な議論を交わすことを企図している。

低湿地の改良や山岳の資源化といった具体的事象から、環境への介入を支える物理的インフラ、さまざまの社会的機構と動因、そしてあらゆる関係の結節点としての都市そのものへ。多様な論点への往還を契機として都市への眼差しを新たにし、来たるべき都市のあり方を考えるときのひとつの参照点とすることを期待している。
